Living as Light and Salt: Embracing a Spiritually Centered Life
In his teachings, Christ encouraged his followers to be the "salt and light of the earth" (Mt 5:13-16), meaning that they should provide flavor and illumination, guiding others toward their true purpose. This profound principle underscores the responsibility we hold to nurture each other’s spiritual well-being above all else, since our spiritual connections form the foundation for all other human relationships.
Living by this calling means leading by example and inspiring others by sharing the spirit of Christ. To achieve this, individuals must first embody the spirit of Christ themselves, striving to become "another Christ" or even living as if "Christ himself" is within them. As St. Paul professes in Galatians 2:20, "I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." This epitomizes the ideal spiritual state, reflecting Christ’s own words: "I am the light of the world... the man who follows me will have the light of life" (Jn 8:12).
Achieving this transformation requires openness and responsiveness to God's grace, allowing Him to shape us through Christ in the Holy Spirit. Human beings are designed not merely to live natural lives but to embrace spiritual and supernatural existence. Our intelligence and free will equip us to know God, discern His will, and choose to love and emulate Him.
Practical steps to nurture this openness include dedicating the first moments after waking to offering oneself and the day’s work to God. Maintaining God’s central place in our thoughts, desires, words, and actions throughout the day is essential.
To sustain this mindset, embracing a structured spiritual routine can be beneficial. Regular mental prayer and contemplation, spiritual readings, receiving sacraments such as the Holy Mass and Communion, and engaging in devotional practices help deepen our connection with God.
Ultimately, the aspiration is to spend every day in the conscious presence of God, who is omnipresent and actively cares for us. Recognizing this truth urges us to live in alignment with God’s presence.
By the end of each day, one should feel assured that life was lived with and for God, embodying a contemplative spirit even amid daily earthly engagements. This balance embodies genuine receptivity and responsiveness to divine grace, making the spiritual journey an integral part of human existence.
