A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky area in Russia early Friday morning, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at 2:58 a.m. local time and originated 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) below the surface.
Following the seismic event, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii issued a tsunami advisory, cautioning that dangerous tsunami waves could impact coastlines within 1000 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter.
However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that there is no tsunami risk to the Philippines from this incident. The agency emphasized, "Hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 1000 km of the earthquake epicenter," but reassured the public that the Philippines remains safe.
Authorities continue monitoring the situation closely as aftershocks and related hazards are assessed.
