Poland and Netherlands Secure Round of 16 Spots in 2025 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championship

Both Poland and the Netherlands showcased their dominance in Pool B on Monday, each clinching a straight-set victory to confirm their places in the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championship.

World No. 1 ranked Poland maintained its formidable form with a 25-21, 25-14, 25-19 triumph over Qatar. Meanwhile, the Netherlands secured a comparable straight-sets win against Romania, finishing 25-23, 26-24, 26-24.

These results improved both teams' records to 2-0 in Pool B, ensuring progression to the playoffs with one preliminary match still remaining.

Poland faced resistance in the opening set as Qatar, ranked 22nd globally, closed the gap to 19-20 following a powerful strike from Youssef Oughlaf. However, a string of four consecutive errors by Qatar enabled Poland to seize the set lead at 24-19, with middle blocker Norbert Huber sealing the set with a decisive kill.

Despite the absence of captain Bartosz Kurek, Poland dominated the second set, quickly building an 18-8 lead highlighted by an effective kill from Huber. Artur Szalpuk and Kamil Semeniuk then contributed to closing out the 25-14 set comfortably.

Determined to overcome their runner-up finish in the 2022 championship, Poland maintained control throughout the final set to complete another sweep.

The Netherlands encountered stiff competition from world No. 21 Romania, with each set fiercely contested and extending into critical points. In Set 2, Romania leveled at 24-all before a Dutch service error and a kill by Michiel Ahyi shifted momentum, allowing the Netherlands to capture the frame and a 2-0 advantage.

Continuing their fight, Romania forced a 24-all tie in the third set. However, a couple of critical errors ultimately cost them, as the Netherlands closed out the match.

Michiel Ahyi led the Netherlands with 19 points, including 14 attacks and five aces, supported by Tom Koops who added 13 points.

The two unbeaten teams are scheduled to face off on Wednesday, with the winner securing the top position in Pool B ahead of the knockout phase.
